Orthopedic Services for Pets

A treatment plan to alleviate bone or joint pain in cats and dogs.

Orthopedic problems affect the bones, tendons, joints, and ligaments – all of which have a direct impact on your pet's mobility. At Alcona Animal Hospital, we are well equipped and experienced to handle the orthopedic needs of cats and dogs. We have modern digital full body X-ray equipment to diagnose various conditions and offer treatment in the form of medications, prescribed diets, and surgery.

When do cats and dogs need orthopedic services?

During the early stages of an orthopedic problem cats and dogs tend to hide their pain. By the time you notice symptoms, this means they are experiencing severe pain. Please contact your veterinarian immediately. Don't hesitate to call us if your pet has these problems:

  • Limping
  • Aggression towards being touched
  • Immobility
  • Difficulty using the stairs
  • Weight loss

Will rehabilitation help my pet's recovery?

Absolutely! Combining medication, rest, and some physiotherapy can help your pet's recovery. Some orthopedic surgeries require several months for cats and dogs to get back to their normal life. Physical rehabilitation relieves some of their pain and encourages repair. We often recommend physiotherapy for pets with the following orthopedic conditions:

  1. Arthritis
  2. Hip dysplasia
  3. Bone fractures
  4. Torn ligaments
  5. Cruciate ligament rupture/surgery
  6. Disc disease
